We bring Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning to special education teachers grades K through 12
Who We Are
Metta, Inc.’s mission is to bring a Mindfulness connection into the hearts, homes and communities across the state of Texas.
Metta, Inc. began in 2018 as the first Mindfulness based organization to address children with special needs, whether that need involves a physical, cognitive or learning disability. Training teachers to use Mindfulness practices with SEL in the classroom allows both the child and the teacher to expand this connection at home with parents and siblings thus influencing the community with a practice that promotes compassion and understanding. Metta, Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization funded by both private donations and grants from philanthropic organizations.
“Imagine a world where children learn early in life to meet challenges they face with control and self-compassion. Teaching children Mindfulness and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills gives them the tools to address their own well-being and allows them to react with compassion for others.”
- Kathleen Allen, Founder of Metta, Inc.
Benefits of Mindfulness for Children
Studies show that Mindfulness practices helps children to:
- Increase focus, attention, self-control, and even class room participation
- Improve conflict resolution and academic performance
- Decrease stress, anxiety, depression, and disruptive behavior.
Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It is slowing down to notice what you are doing or feeling. It is the opposite of rushing or being busy. Mindfulness practices are learned ways to slow down to be fully in this moment and to notice.
Mindfulness Training for Special Education Teachers
Metta, Inc. helps offset the costs for teachers to complete the Mindfulness Certification Training for Educators (MCTE). This is a 30-hour course that is specifically designed for Special Education classroom teachers and assistants. Participants will learn to use simple Mindfulness practices that are practical, meaningful, and fun. Practices can be integrated into the classroom, and the whole school environment, at both scheduled and unplanned moments to support attention and focus, as well as to improve skills in emotional regulation and stress management. Participants will also learn to use Mindfulness practices to support students with test or performance anxiety, impulse control and to create a calm classroom culture. Practices focusing on self-care, including Mindful self-compassion and tools for personal practice, will also be offered. All Mindfulness tools will be offered through a SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) perspective, and participants will walk away with a Mindful Teacher Planner to support integrating practices throughout the school day.
This course is typically offered for a group of teachers at a school or school district. The course can be delivered on-site or virtually. Please use the Contact Us form on this site to inquire about your
specific needs.
